Coach Toporowski discusses Competitive Goals philosophy and the state of the youth game

May 14, 2014
Dear Parents,

I would like to thank everyone who has participated in any of our Competitive Goals clinics, camps, private lessons and our 4 on 4 Spring League. We try to provide all players with many different options to challenge themselves to improve their skills and maximize their game. Our training philosophy centers around skating and skill development first and foremost to give players the tools they need to compete at all levels. My hockey experience in Canada, the US and most importantly the 12 years I spent in the top European leagues has allowed me to see the many different theories on player development and to create programs that incorporate the very best training from around the world.

What is of great concern to me is that we are falling behind in the US. Not all players are destined to play D1 or in the NHL but we all want to be the best we can possibly be. One of the biggest problems we have here in the US is we over compete and under train. Youth players should be practicing 3-4 times for every game they play however in the US the average is closer to 1:1. Too much emphasis at a young age is being placed on games, systems and winning and losing and not enough time is being spent on pure skill development. The youth players in Canada and Europe focus on developing elite skills far more than youth programs in the US. The results can be seen in international competitions at all ages where Canadian and European skill levels exceed those of the US teams.

Our philosophy at Competitive Goals is to give players the opportunity to develop elite level skills using the best training methods from Canada, Europe, Russia and the US. We focus on the skating techniques necessary to fully develop a players agility, speed, strength and ability to move quickly and smoothly on the ice in all situations. Our puck handling skills training focuses on developing soft hands and a full arsenal of passing and stickhandling moves to allow a player to control the puck and ultimately the game. Correct skill techniques can only be achieved through proper teaching and repetition.

We seek to provide kids with the knowledge and tools to reach their potential. We do it in a challenging and fun way that pushes them out of their comfort zone. We want our players to be willing to try new concepts and techniques and to be comfortable when they push themselves and fail. It is only then, when they raise the bar and keep trying, that they will maximize their development. We want them to set goals and be proud when they work hard and exceed those goals.

I am passionate about training hockey players at all levels from pro, major junior, college, high school right down to mites. Competitive Goals can give all players, of all ages and abilities, the additional skill training and development they need to take their game to the next level.

Please join us on the ice this spring and summer and see the Competitive Goals difference!
